FUTURE MODERNITIES / Pop-Up Think Tank is an event that brings together three significant regional platforms dedicated to researching and strategically planning urban space.
The event presented three cases of future urban development in Rijeka, Sarajevo, and Novi Sad, followed by a panel discussion with participants and the audience.
One of the key focuses of this event is highlighting the importance of education in shaping the cities of the future. FUTURE MODERNITIES aims to emphasize innovative educational approaches that can empower individuals and communities to better understand the rapidly changing world.
DELTALAB – Center for Urban Transition, Architecture, and Urbanism is a multidisciplinary center at the University of Rijeka dedicated to research and practice in spatial and strategic design within the context of contemporary political, ecological, and technological crises. Through two interconnected fields of action—interdisciplinary university specialist studies in Urban Studies, as well as research, consulting, and architectural practice—DELTALAB critically examines and pragmatically develops spatial and strategic solutions with the mission of creating conditions for a radically new, open, and resilient future. Bringing together architects, designers, engineers, entrepreneurs, sociologists, cultural theorists, philosophers, artists, activists, and many other collaborators, DELTALAB nurtures interdisciplinarity and innovative collaboration models necessary for developing adaptable knowledge structures in a world of unpredictable multiple crises.
Urban Design Studio Sarajevo presented a project on Sarajevo’s urban transformation, supporting the modernization of urban planning in the Sarajevo Canton by proposing a digital decision-making tool for city planning over the next 30 years. Through various initiatives and efforts, the project contributes to Sarajevo’s revitalization and the creation of better conditions for sustainable and economically justified development.
This multidisciplinary project includes the recently established Urban Design Studio Sarajevo workspace and event venue; a decentralized laboratory for research, data collection, and education called Studio Mobil; a digital twin of the entire city of Sarajevo; small-scale and prototypical architectural interventions; and academic courses at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) and the University of Sarajevo.
FUTURE MODERNITIES is a program by BAZA, aiming to inspire communities to think creatively and critically about the future of cities in the context of technology and society, encouraging innovative ideas and solutions that can shape tomorrow’s urban landscape.
