BOOK NOVI SAD – MODERN CITY

The book “Novi Sad – Modern City” illuminates a crucial, yet insufficiently recognised episode in the urban development of Novi Sad during the second half of the 20th century. Focusing on the period of post-war modernisation, the publication demonstrates how Novi Sad underwent a profound spatial, cultural and social transformation, establishing itself as an exemplar of a modern Yugoslav city. Through various thematic sections – spanning urbanism and architecture, to industry, participatory planning and cultural production – the contributing authors analyse the processes that shaped the city’s identity.
The publication brings together a diverse range of professional and authorial perspectives from researchers, architects and art historians. The structure of the book is designed to encourage reflection on the contemporary relevance of modernist heritage. A key contribution of the book lies in its educational and critical dimension, highlighting the importance of understanding the continuity of modernisation and the need to preserve architectural and urban heritage. By drawing attention to forgotten values and spaces, the book provides a foundation for a new reading of the city and contributes to the formation of a contemporary, inclusive urban identity for Novi Sad.
